Housing association supports university students

February 19, 2010

THREE city students are set to complete their dream qualifications thanks to the generosity of Peterborough’s largest landlord.

Cross Keys Homes has awarded three of its tenants who attend the University Centre Peterborough a bursary each worth £1,000. Six students were shortlisted from over 100 applications for the bursary and interviewed by a panel made up of representatives from Cross Keys Homes and the University.

Cross Keys Homes’ chief executive, Mick Leggett, said: “All three students showed sheer determination in their applications. It was this attitude that got them through the scrutiny of the bursary panel to be awarded £1,000.”

“I would like to wish the students well with their chosen courses and hope the bursary helps them to go on to achieve their ambitions.”

Mick Leggett also chairs Peterborough’s Growth Partnership and is a strong advocate for encouraging other businesses to get involved with the city’s first university. He said: “The need for a university was a top priority of the city’s businesses and now it is here we should all do what we can help it grow”

“The new university is a great asset to Peterborough and will play a major role in helping Peterborough residents gain the education to help themselves, and the city to be successful. Cross Keys Homes is proud to show its support and hopes this will go some way to making Peterborough a great place to live and work.”

Joanne Radford, a mature student studying journalism, who was awarded one of the bursaries said: “The bursary has enabled me to replace my very basic personal computer”.

She also added “I feel proud that I am setting a positive example to my children, to never allow difficult circumstances to get in the way of personal achievements.”

Student, Paulo Francisco, added: “The bursary has enabled me to buy books which are essential to complete my computing degree. I have a young family and work part time so the extra help from Cross Keys Homes is gratefully received.”

The students were presented with the bursary payment by Cross Keys Homes’ chief executive, Mick Leggett and The University Centre Peterborough’s Academic Director, Paul McDermott. Paul said: “The student bursary is a fantastic scheme to support students at a local University facility. I hope that other local organisations are able to follow the lead by Cross Keys Homes and support the university as it grows and develops.”

The University Centre Peterborough will be holding open days on Wednesday, February 24 and Wednesday, March 24 from 2pm to 8pm. Tutors from each curriculum area will be available to answer questions, with current students on hand offering tours of the new centre on Park Crescent.
