Advice: applying made easy

Every application we receive is processed by Meghann, our Sales and Lettings Coordinator. Meghann knows the process inside out, so here she shares her tips on how to make the application process as smooth as possible.

We use the information you provide in your application form to check you’re eligible to buy a shared ownership home and to get the ball rolling on calculating the size of your share. The application form might look complicated, but really we just need the basic information that you’ll also have to give to your mortgage provider once you reach that stage, so it’s really helpful to get everything together in one place so you can use it when you need it throughout the process.

1. Find your home first

You might have decided that shared ownership is the right choice for you and even know where you want to move, but you should only submit an application once you’ve found the home of your dreams! That’s because we can’t start working out the details of a sale if we don’t know exactly which home you’re interested in.


2. Plan ahead

You’ll need to complete the form in one go so make sure you’ve collected all of the information you need to provide ahead of time. We have a quick list of what you’ll need to have to hand our apply page. Like I said earlier, you’ll probably need to share this information with other people too so a little bit of preparation can definitely make life easier for you.


3. Have your Help to Buy number ready

We can’t move forward with your application if you don’t have a Help to Buy number. Help to Buy is the government scheme that all shared owners are required to register with which just helps to confirm you’re eligible to buy a shared ownership home. Often people confuse the scheme with the Help to Buy ISA but it doesn’t have any links with financial products, it’s just to help the government keep track of how effective shared ownership is. It’s worth registering with the Help to Buy scheme sooner rather than later so there are no delays.


4. Go into detail

We need to understand your circumstances in full, so we need you to be as specific as possible when you tell us about your incomings, outgoings and household composition. The more accurate you are in your application, the easier it will be for us to process and should mean fewer delays for you.
