We are thrilled to be working with East Anglian children’s charity, Break, to provide a positive future for young people leaving care in Peterborough.

We have provided a three bedroom home in Dogsthorpe for supported accommodation for two young people to live in, with support workers from Break available to them, in order to gain the skills they need to live independently in the future.

The support the young people receive will enable them to transition between care and an independent adult life by providing them with support on budgeting, employability, education and tenancy support. They will also provide them with an emotional wellbeing service to build their mental resilience and link them with the community based services they may need in the future.

Our Chief Executive, Claire Higgins said of the project: “This is a fantastic example of partnership working to solve a very real problem within our communities. Young people leaving care face many challenges with regards to accessing housing and maintaining tenancies. They do not have the support networks that so many of our young people take for granted. At CKH we have the housing these young people need, and Break have the expertise to give them the very best start to their adult lives. It is perfect that we have been able to come together to make this home a reality.”

Rachel Cowdry, CEO from Break said: “Access to good quality housing is a real problem for young people who are leaving care. We know that 14% of young care leavers sleep rough within their first year and 26% sofa surf. This home will enable us to provide really strong foundations for the future, to enable these young people to access the education, employment, support networks, and most importantly housing, for their futures.
