Community screening sparks new ideas

Daniel Blake event

News story published on 26 July 2017

Cross Keys Homes recently invited 60 residents, employees and stakeholders to watch a screening of Ken Loach’s award winning film, I Daniel Blake. Released in 2016, the film explores a sad account of the effects of poverty on people who struggle with the processes and systems they are faced with while they are not in work.

Following the film, Cross Keys Homes’ guests were invited to get involved in a conversation about the themes surrounding the film, with the intention of debating and discussing practical options and realistic measures, providing sustainable solutions to the film’s themes.

Cross Keys Homes already offer a variety of free support; from offering assistance finding work, to education and confidence building, all to help to reduce dependency on Daniel Blake event audience welfare benefits. Recently this year, Cross Keys Homes were also chosen as Peterborough’s delivery partner for the New Horizons and Community Connections projects, which are targeted at tackling the root causes of poverty and offering support to those needing the most help, to build upon a participant’s long-term stability, confidence and employability.

Kate Newbolt, Customer, Community and Stakeholder Engagement Service Manager said: “The aim of the evening was to raise awareness of the issues that sadly many of our tenants face around unemployment and to listen to other people’s points of view, which will ultimately help to support our future planning and preparations to support the community.

“Together, by working with our strong network of our residents, partners and employees, we can co-create approaches, solutions and plans for individuals for positive results.”

Speaking about the event, Cross Keys Homes’ chief executive Claire Higgins added: “Our social purpose means that we often support the most vulnerable. We are here to support our residents, whether it’s providing them a safe and secure home, or investing in their skills and providing them with support when times are tough. Together, we will always ensure that Cross Keys Homes do all that we can to support our residents.”
