Cross Keys Homes is launching a brand new care service which it believes provides a benchmark for how all domiciliary care services should be provided.
At Cross Keys Care the emphasis is on quality throughout – quality of staff and quality of care. The service only employs staff on a salaried basis, and so they are paid for their travel time. This means, that when a client books an hours appointment, they get an hours care!
Staff are also paid for time spent in extensive and high quality training and receive a free uniform. There is also a real emphasis on team work and support, so no care worker feels isolated or alone.
In setting up the new scheme, staff at Cross Keys Care researched the market thoroughly and found the same complaints from customers of other care services coming up time and again – they felt that they never saw the same care worker twice, the carers were so rushed when they were there and they were so often late.
“We are determined not to repeat these mistakes of other care companies – we want to make sure clients have consistency in their care staff and that our staff are on time and do a great job while they are with their client,” said Cross Keys Homes Director of Operations, Claire Higgins. “That means we invest in them as people and train them to a high standard – not just give them a DVD to watch - and we are working with Peterborough City College to provide that high quality training.”
Claire continues: “By valuing our staff and providing them with a more relaxed way of working we know they will provide a great service to our clients. It’s often the softer things that matter just as much as the care itself – the time to listen to a problem, to get to know the client well enough to notice that they aren’t themselves that day or that something is worrying them – often it’s something quite small that they can put right for them as well - maybe even just sending a birthday card to their grandson - and the great thing is that our staff have the time to do this too. We actually encourage them to help in this way”
Fawzia Giga, care worker at Cross Keys Care finds the company completely different to any care agencies she has worked in before: “Having worked for other care organisations I can definitely say working for Cross Keys Care has been the best move I have made. I am a valued member of a great team where my views are listened to. I am now paid travel time, so my days are more relaxed. I am given enough time to do a great job and I can spend time with my customers and chat to them a lot more. I also know that support and advice is only a phone call away.”
