New courses for the New Year

Participants on a previous course

Our popular Mental Health Awareness and Volunteering courses will be running again in January.

Mental Health Awareness is a Level 1 accredited course aimed at a wide range of people with an interest in raising their understanding of mental health issues.  It would complement study in a range of areas, eg citizenship, PSHE, healthcare, social care, counselling or public services.  It may also be particularly useful for those working within the voluntary and community sector and for others whose role calls for interaction with the general public in their day-to-day work. However, you do not need to be working or studying in any of these fields - you may just want to get a better understanding of mental health issues and how you can support those who may have them.

This qualification aims to:

  • raise awareness of the issues surrounding mental health difficulties
  • dispel some of the myths and misconceptions frequently linked to mental health issues
  • develop learners’ knowledge of the rights of those with mental health issues

The course is completely free and will be running at two venues, for six weeks. Each lesson is four hours.

Starting Wednesday 9th January at Hinchcliffe Community Room (Sheltered Scheme), 10.30 - 2.30.

Starting Thursday 10th January at Westwood Hub, 10.30 - 2.30.

Our volunteering course is perfect for anyone who currently volunteers of is looking to start volunteering. Charities are also welcome to send volunteers on the course to get a good understanding of their role. It is also a Level 1 accredited course.

The course covers areas such as:

  • the level commitment required as a volunteer
  • expectations around health and safety, behaviour and attitude
  • how to identify transferrable skills
  • equality and diversity

The course is completely free and will be running for six weeks. Each lesson is four hours.

Starting Monday 7th January at Hinchcliffe Community Room (Sheltered Scheme), 10.30 - 2.30.
