Stay safe this Halloween
Halloween should be a frighteningly fun time that the whole family can enjoy. But we want to keep the really scary stuff for the horror films, so make sure you don’t get too carried away and follow some basic hints to keep your family and community safe.
- Trick or treat responsibly. Only visit the homes of people you know and respect those who don’t answer the door. It can be a frightening experience for the old or those who live alone, so be respectful.
- Accompany young children when trick or treating.
- Stay in well lit areas, be careful crossing roads and make sure you are visible – all black clothing maybe spooky, but car drivers won’t be able to see you in the dark.
- Don’t throw things like eggs or flour at homes. This is anti-social behaviour. Respect your neighbours.
- If you are carving a pumpkin keep sharp knives away from children and take care yourself. Always use battery candles rather than real ones.
- Halloween costumes are not always made to the same safety standards as other clothes and can catch fire more easily. Making your own costumes from old clothes and other items can be more fun, cheaper, safer and better for the environment. There are some great ideas on the BBC website.
- If you don’t feel confident answering the door to trick or treaters, that’s fine. If you do answer the door, make sure you put the chain on. If you feel really worried about the evening, maybe you could invite a friend or relative round.
- If you have a friend, neighbour or relative who maybe feeling a little anxious about spending Halloween make sure you check in on them or even pop by to visit them – but make sure you let them know you are coming!
We want everyone to enjoy Halloween and feel safe and secure in their homes. By putting a little thought into planning you evening, thinking of others and being a good neighbour we can do that.
