Be water-wise: waste less, pay less

Be water-wise this summer and think before you turn on the tap! There are lots of small ways you can reduce your water use, which is great for the planet and helps keep your water bills low too!
In your home:
- Use a washing-up bowl to catch excess water. This can reduce water waste by up to 50%!
- Fill your washing machine to its recommended load size for the most efficient use of water.
- Only flush the 3Ps – Pee, Paper and Poo to prevent sewer blockages, pollution and water waste. You should never flush wipes, cotton balls or nappies.
- Check for leaks – Check your taps and pipes for signs or sounds of leaks. A tap dripping at 1 drip per second loses over 12,000 litres per year! If you notice a leak anywhere in your home, call us on 01733 385000 to report a repair.
In your garden:
- Leave the lawn – you shouldn’t need to water your lawn in dry spells, they will usually bounce back as soon as it rains.
- Use mulch – put it on top of your soil to help keep moisture in, so you do not need to water as often.
- Water wisely – water in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation. Use a watering can rather than a hose or sprinkler. Only water at the root to avoid wasting water where the plants won’t need it. Check the weather forecast – if rain is due then there is no need to water!
- Install a water butt – collect rain to use as a free water source for watering your garden!
Be bill-wise too!
