At CKH we believe in the power of volunteering. Becoming a volunteer and helping out in your community can be an amazing and life changing experience, and volunteering with CKH means you’ll be completely supported throughout your volunteer journey.

Why volunteer?

The reasons people volunteer are many. For some it’s a social experience and for others it’s a stepping stone into paid work. Here are some reasons to get involved. Maybe you identify with some of them?

Current volunteering roles available:

Litter Pick Lead Volunteer: You'll lead our fantastic bunch of litter picking volunteers at our Westwood Community Hub, every week. You'll deliver the health and safety briefing to the volunteers, be responsible for the equipment and for arranging the disposal of the rubbish at the end. You'll receive full training and support. This role requires a regular, weekly commitment.

Volunteer Team Leader - Community Gardeners: You'll be supervising our dedicated band of gardening volunteers as they help residents to tidy up gardens that have got out of control. You'll collect volunteers from the community hub and drive them to the property (so you'll need an MOTd and appropriately insured car); ensure best practice is complied with and maintain a safe working environment. You'll also liaise with the resident and carry out gardening activities.

Volunteer Gardeners: We’re looking for volunteer gardeners to help some of our residents across Peterborough whose gardens have got a bit too much for them. You’ll help them out with a bit of mowing, pruning and weeding to get their gardens into a manageable condition. We’ll provide all the tools and safety gear, you just need to wear appropriate clothing.

Volunteer Gardener at our South Bretton Family and Community Centre: If you're a keen gardener with a spare hour a week then we need you! We are looking for a volunteer gardener to help keep the brilliant garden at our South Bretton Family Community Centre looking amazing for the families, young people and community group who use the Centre. 

Friendship and Games Club Volunteers: Are you friendly and outgoing and enjoy helping people to socialise and chat? Then you are just the person we are looking for to help set up and run our community based Friendship and Games Club! 

Wellbeing Garden Volunteers: We are looking for people to help support and develop our new Community Wellbeing garden in Olive Road, Dogsthorpe. No previous gardening experience required, just a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in!

Neighbourhood Champions: We’re looking for people who have a keen eye for spotting things that need attention our community spaces. Repairs, fly-tipping, broken amenities - we need you to report them so we can put them right.

Digital Support Volunteers: We are looking for digitally competent people to support others to get online. You’ll need good people skills and lots of patience to help them to develop their online skills, access support and advice on the web and stay safe in the cyber world. If this sounds like something you could help us with, then get in touch.

Literacy Support Volunteers: We are looking for people with previous experience of helping those who struggle with reading and writing to help change lives. You’ll need good people skills and lots of patience, to support others with their literacy skills and form filling.

Numeracy Support Volunteers: We are looking for people with previous experience of helping others to overcome their fear of numbers to help change their lives. In addition to good numeracy skills, you’ll need good people skills and lots of patience. If this sounds like something you could help us with, then get in touch.

Community Events Volunteer: Come and work alongside our Communities team to deliver fun and informative events all over the areas we work in. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and even gain experience that will look great on your CV!

Volunteer Activity Leader – Pottery: We are looking for someone to lead our Pottery for Mental Health sessions. You must have previous experience of working within mental, i.e. as a counsellor or mental health support worker. You will support our participants to use pottery as a way to reduce their feelings of stress, anxiety or depression. Participants are facing mild to moderate mental health challenges. You will help with setting up the sessions, support the participants and help to flag any concerns to the Project Lead.

Get work experience through volunteering: If you are looking for gain new skills and get some amazing work experience to help your job hunting, come and volunteer with CKH - you’ll also be giving back to your community. We can provide you with a wealth of validated work experience and a reference to help you on your journey into further training or employment. You can also get inspiration for a community based career move. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and even gain experience that will look great on your CV!

Litter picking: Litter picking is a great way to get out of the house, get some fresh air and exercise, and meet new people – as well as making a difference to your community. We are holding weekly litter picks every Thursday: 

  • Westwood: meet at 12.30pm outside the Westwood Community Hub, Hampton Court.

We can also support you to carry out litter picks in your community.
