  1. Can I change the areas I have asked to move to?

Of course, you can change the areas you are interested in moving to using our update your preferences form. (This form does not count as an application, so if you are contacting us for the first time, make sure you apply to move).

It’s best to keep us up to date with your preferences as we will always aim to offer you a home in an area that works for you. If you refuse an offer, we will only make one further offer so it’s important we know where you want to live.

  4. How do you match people to homes?

We have a clear process that we follow which considers factors like the reason you need to move, your health and mobility, the type of home you need and even where in the city you would like to live.

Residents who are under-occupying, overcrowding or have medical needs will be given priority.

Our aim is to only match you to a home that suits your needs which is why we ask for information about your circumstances and will contact you twice a year to check your details.

  5. How long will it take to find a home?

There is very high demand for housing in Peterborough, so it may take many months or years before a home that suits your needs becomes available.

Our current average waiting times are:

    • 1 bedroom: 2 years or more
    • 2 bedroom: 3 years or more
    • 3 beroom: 5 years or more
    • 4+ bedroom: 7 years or more

If you widen the choice of areas you are interested in moving to, you may be able to reduce your waiting time.

You may be able to move sooner through mutual exchange. You can also register your need to move with Peterborough City Council, who may be able to offer you a home.

  6. How long will you reserve a home that I have been matched to?

As so many people in Peterborough are looking for homes, we will not be able to hold an offer for more than 24 hours. If you have not responded to us within 24 hours we will contact the next person on our list.

That doesn’t mean you have to be ready to move within 24 hours, you just need to confirm your interest so we can start the process.

  7. Should I contact you about the availability of homes?

No, once we’ve added you to our match list, we’ll contact you when we can match you to an available property. We’ll also email you every three months with a general update about the service, including information about where demand is highest and how you can update your preferences.

You should only contact us if your circumstances have changed or you would like to update your preferences.

  8. What medical evidence to you need to see to support my application?

We assess medical priority for physical and mental health conditions based on evidence from your GP or specialist. If you believe you, or a member of your household, have a medical condition which is impacted by your housing, we will need to see evidence to support your application. That includes evidence that:

    • There is a clear risk to your health that would be removed by moving home
    • Someone could avoid moving to a residential or nursing home if they lived in a more suitable home
    • Your home needs to be adapted but the works cannot be carried out
    • The layout or design of your home makes it difficult to live independently, has led to someone being housebound, or is stopping discharge from hospital
    • A medical condition is likely to get significantly worse and have an unacceptable impact on quality of life because of your current housing.

  10. Will I be able to move if I'm not in credit on my account?

No, we won’t be able to offer you a home if there’s debt on your account. You risk missing out on a move if you miss a rent payment. We won’t consider you for a home until your account has been clear from debt for at least three months. That includes charges on other accounts, for example to pay for repair works.

If you’re struggling to keep your account clear, talk to our Income Management team about a payment plan to get into credit. You may also find our budgeting tool and benefits calculator useful.
